Adventures in airline travel
I’m at the airport, using my 20 free minutes of internet access (Thanks, American Express!). I’m waiting for the 8th flight I’ve been booked on in the last three days to go out according to some kind of schedule. I should get in late tonight, and head to work tomorrow and Friday. But I may be sick on Friday, I haven’t decided.
I might post a complete review of this total...
God fucking dammit
I spent at least an hour earlier today standing in line at the airport trying to rebook my flight from Maine (Land Of Snow) to Minneapolis (Place That Requires Me To Be At Work To Get Paid). I had to go to the airport because the phone number was just giving me an automated message saying that due to the weather in the East Coast, they weren’t taking any calls. In order to get back tomorrow...
Sad
This amazing woman died last night at age 93. She was my paternal grandmother, Mimi. She had 5 children, 8 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren that she had spent some time with. She did the crossword puzzle online every day, had a Kindle, and got most of her news from blogs. She was admitted to the hospital three days ago with heart problems. One of the valves in her heart had been getting...
Packing and cleaning
I’m headed to Portland in the morning, so I’m packing warm clothes and cleaning my apartment. I can’t wait to see my family again and have a week off of work! Yay!
I'm trying to write my personal statement
And it’s AWFUL. It’s giving me anxiety and I don’t like trying to put this crap in writing. It’s like my year-end review all over again. I’m with a friend, so that’s good, but we’re both less productive when there’s so much to talk about! Damn, they just came around and said they’re closing in ten minutes. Have to write some more bullshit...
Well, hell.
Forecast starting around 9 tonight, continuting until Saturday afternoon: Up to 2 feet of snow, drifts up to 5 feet. Possible white-out conditions, and wind chill of -20 to -35. Guess I’ll be staying in all weekend. Any suggestions on what snow-panic food I should buy tonight at the grocery store?
The universe is amazing

Eta Carinae was the site of a giant outburst about 150 years ago, when it became one of the brightest stars in the southern sky. Though the star released as much visible light as a supernova explosion, it survived the outburst. Somehow, the explosion produced two polar lobes and a large thin equatorial disk, all moving outward at about 1.5 million miles per...
People who live in Maine!
Susan Collins is a key holdout for repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. If you are so inclined, read about it here. Then go here for the number to her office and tell her you, as her constituent, support her voting for cloture on the Defense Authorization Bill. It’s not completely ethical, but I’m going to call after work if the vote hasn’t happened.
This isn’t like racial integration in that you’re moving massive amounts of...
– Historian Nathaniel Frank, on repealing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, on NPR’s Fresh Air 12/7/10 (via nprfreshair)
Listening to this interview right now. Frank’s book, Unfriendly Fire, is excellent.
Today was not a good day to have tumblr down. My mom had hip replacement surgery this morning, so I was stressed out all day, and I could have really used all of your posts instead of thinking about work, or how far I am from my family. But she came through the surgery fine and she’s recovering in the hospital for a few days until going back home. I had a couple of short, funny conversations...

Writing my self-assessment for my year-end review at work is stressing me the fuck out. Putting my job performance into corporate jargon is not at all easy for me, and I’ve been postponing doing it for weeks. Can’t we just talk about how I’ve been doing without me trying to summarize how much what I’ve done this year aligns with the goals I wrote for myself in April?

Feel free to skip
My mom told me something while I was home at Thanksgiving, and it’s been bouncing around my brain for days. I need to get it out so I can stop thinking about it.
I had successfully blocked this from my mind, but when I was in 7th grade, a boy in my class told me (online) that I was ugly and I should kill myself. That was the worst year of my life so far, and I left that school at the end...
Question
What do you do when a co-worker talks to the public/clients in a way that you find very irritating/inefficient? Right now my strategy is putting both my earphones in and playing Bon Iver, but I’m open to suggestions!
Stupid
Via Talking Points Memo:
According to a letter delivered to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid this morning, Republicans will block all debate on all legislation until the tax cut impasse is bridged and the federal government has been fully funded — even if it means days tick by and the Senate misses its opportunity to pass DADT, an extension of unemployment insurance and other Dem items.
